CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING.
By Telegraph—Press association. TRENTHAM, March 5. The Rifle Association meeting opened in flne weather, thero being a light but variable wiud changing from north east to south-east. Colonel Collins referred briefly to the great improvements on the range, including long range distances. Already the Government had spent £1,200, nud the total cost would be about £2,000, which rendred it one of the fluest ranges south of the line. Though the present intention of the Government is noi to send a team to Bisley this year, if, however, there is any phenomenal shooting which would justify him in recommending the Government to send a team, it might be influenced to do so. LATER. After lunch the Auckland match was concluded in a fresh and tricky wind, which caused trouble to some of the madmen. in one instance a Southern competitor failed to hit the target. Rait, of Uislmme, was leading" with a score ot' CG, hut in the final stage .C. Ilollard, of Petone, with the good score ot 97, came to the front, and received .first prize, bis ecoie being a couple of points less than Hawthorne, Wellington, wen the match wij;h last jear. Towards the wind died away, and there was a marked improvement in the shooting. The match will be resumed in the morning and will occupy the forenoon.
