TAHITI AND TUAMOTU DEVASTATED

APPALLING LOSS OF L IbE. SEVERAL ISLANDS DISAPPEAR. Reaeived March 5, 9.50 p.m. NEW YORK, March 5. The steamer Mariposa, which has arrived at, San Francisco, reports that a terrific hurricane occurred on the night of February 7th, and devastated Tahiti and Tuamotu Islands. Ten thousand people are reported to have been drowned, and 5,000,000 dollars' worth of damage was done. The British and American consulates at Papieti were wrecked. Five hundred British subjects need relief. Several islands disappeared.
