CELEBRATE THEIR SILVER WEDDING.

BERLIN, February 26

Numerous deputations congratulated ttie Kaiser and Kaiserin on the occasion of their f silver wadding. General Swayne presented Kiug Edward's and Queen Alexandra's gift. Several speeches were made. Prince Bulow emphasised the desirableness of the union between the Throne and the people. The life of the Sovereigns and their family was a model to the nation, said Prince Bulow.

Prince Albert Brunswick spoke on behalf of the Army and Navy. The Kaiser, iu replying, said: "My first and last thought is for my fighting forces on land and on sea. The Empire's constant endeavour is to work for the alleviation of want and sickness. May f God grant that war will not come,' but if it should come, lam firmly cunvinced that the Army will acquit itself as it did in 1870."

(The Franco-Prussian War was fought in the year 1870 and resulted in France sustaining a most humiliating defeat, and having to pay an enormous indemnity to Germany.)
