FIRE.

NELSON. February 25. About 3 o'clock, this morning, a fire broke out in the Institute, Public Library, and Museum. Tba buildings, with the excefticn of the Museum, were completely gutted. A great many books ami things from the Museum were removed to safety, but tiie loss is great. Tbe Library contained many valuable and some rare works, while the Muaeum, though not large, possessed] unique things. The Muoeum was comparatively a new building attached to the Institute. Over the front portion of the Library, Buller Saxon, surveyor, had bia offices, and his records, and those of John Rocbford, and others, were destroyed I was well as instruments. Saxnn estimates his loss at £SOO. The Institute building was insured for £6OO, books only £SOO, Saxon's instruments, etc., £l5O. The building was left apparently safe at half-past nine the previous night.
