Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Canadian Premier, sneaking at a great colitical banquet in Toronto, deolared 1 that the desire of Canada for the maintenance of the union of tho Empire was stronger than ever. Mutual preference with the Motherland, he deoiaredl, was only possible by' a change of the fiscal' system. Tho elections in the Old Country had not affeoted the position, as Canada was friendly with 1 whichever party was in power.
