RIFLE SHOOTING AT ETON.

Preparations were being made at Eton College, when the last mail left England, for the establishment of compulsory rifle shooting for the summer term. The scheme originated with Mr A. A. Sommerville, a former commandant of the school Volunteers, and\ was taken up by Canon Lytteltou, the head-master, with tbe strong approval of the senior masters. A miniature rifle range for the use of the Morris tube is to be erected in the drill ball, and a sub-target range and a safety range will probably also be fitted up. No boy at Eton will be permitted to handle a rifle until be has been eighteen months at school, and the instruction will be carried out on the block system—that is, 200 boys will be trained at a time, until all tbe boys who.have been eighteen months at school have a thorough knowledge' of marksmanship; Canon Lyttelton, it is said, wishes to animate Etonians with the spirit of chivalry and tho love of arrrs typified in the Japanese buahido. 1
