WELLINGTON HARBOUR.
s —- OMB INTERESTING FIGURES. WELLINGTON, February 20. The New Zaalaad Shipping Company has addressed a letter; to the Harbour Board stating that as the latter appears to be under the impression that Wellington is the cheapest port in the colony'for shipping, they desire to remove that impression irom their mind by giving a statement of charges payable for the same services and on the same amount of cargo on present voyages of the steamers Turakina arid Kaipara. These are, given as: —-Turakina: Wellington, £331; Auckland, £209; Lyttelton, £218; Dunedin, £240. Kaipara: Wellington, £268; Auckland, £187; Lyttelton, £196; Dunedin, £240. The excess here is ac patently accounted for by tbe Harbour Improvement Rate being a charge against ships instead of goods as elsewhere, and because of at other ports the charges for a second visit on the same voyage are reduced. Other points of difference are mentioned which tell against Wellington, and a table is attached showing that the percentage of harbour revenue contributed by ships is only 3 per cent and 8 per cent, at Sydney and Melbourne, whereas it runs to 55 per. cent, in Wellington.
