NELSON BAND CONTEST.
JUDGE'S NOTES ON THE MASTEUTON BAND. (LJy Telegraph—Special to Age). NELSON, February 16. The judge's notes on the test selection,nn<i marching contest were received this afternoon. Commenting ou the Masterton Baud's performance, in the test selection, the judge reported that the maestoso was good in attack and there was a good body of tone and balance likewise The "dim" was well managed at bar 12. Bar 13 was not quite in tuue, and not strictly in tune at bars 23 and 21. The same remark applies to 27, 28, and 29. ThoV'rall" and "dim" were well done nevertheless. The Jargetto accompaniments were slightly out of tuue. The "cr.»3." and "dim" at bar 10 were very well managed. The accompaniments were slightly out of tuue at bar 27. The soprano and horu were not in time on F-sbarp here, but the horn playing was fairly •well done. The collaudo was well managed at bar 32, and on the mezzo staccato was properly done at oar 37. The lento for the horn including the solo was nicely done. Tte movements, on the whole, were well rendered. Allegro moderator , Soprauo do.ng good work here; the solo cornet likewise. Solo cornet continues to do goqd work, more particularly a© bars 17 and 18. Stringendo: Properly observed by the solo cornet here, from letter D and on very good indeed. In fact, from bar 1 to 49 the whole was very nicely played. Euphonium cadenza wab very fairly played though the judge would like a fuller and warmer tone. Contibile: Faulty. The intonation by the euphonium in bar six of the accompaniments was very good. The solo cornet was very pretty, the letter E playing, with a nice tone and expression. Accompaniments slightly out of time- ' at bar 21. B-flat cornet very nice ; here. The movement, including the ; euphonium solo and the cadenza, j was very well rendered. ModeratO' playing with nice toae here, though, the boras in places were a little out of tune. The "ores." at bar 9 was well managed.also the temito sign at bar 10. From Ito letter F was very nicely played. The trombone solo accompaniments were very neat here, and nicely subdued. The trombone claying was with a nice broad tone and slow. The cornet and trombone were not striutly in tune on F at bar 14. Otherwise both were doing good work. "Ores" at G and "dim" at bar 20 were very well managed. The pressig la movement at bar 27 was correctly done.' The "vite ores" at bar'ft and the "dim" at bar 6 were nicely done. The "rit" and "dim" were well managed. At bars 9 and 10 the movement was very creditably played. The caotabilb: B-flat cornets on the thirds at bar 6 were very pretty. The baritone playing solo rather tamely, but with a nice tone, split the top B at bar 7. From bar 10 on the solo cornet and baritone were doing very good work, indeed. The movement was very well played. Allegretto: Nioe smart work indeed "rep" and soprano cornets not strictly together at har 27. Accompaniments slightly out of time from bars 27 to 29. Otherwise it was well played. Laaghetto: 'The. accompaniments were, very pretty, the solo cornet playing with a beautiful broad tone and nioe Style and expression. The baritone should stand out just a little more. The first baritone's intonation was slightly at fault at bar 9.. At bar 13 It seems as if only one baritone was playing; the accompaniments were slightly out of tune at bar 15. A piacere for solo cornet was played with lovely tpnn. The last three quavers were wrongly phrased. Nevertheless the cadenza for the solo cornet at bar 22 to 24 was played with a nice tone and expression, though the judge did not quite agree with the phrasing. The movement was'very nicely rendered. Maestoso, bar 8: Intonation of B-flat cornets slightly at fault. At bars 10 to 12 the horns were not strictly in tune. The movement was well rendered. Aliego vivace: At bar 19 and on the basses were slightly out of tune. A well played movement, though not strictly together at ail times. The judge oonoludes by saying: "This band possesses a very capable solo cornet. In fact, the soloists all round have done good work. I listened to the performance with a great deal of pleasure. Points 94; second place." Notes on the Music in the Marching Competition.—Selection, "The Challenge." Masterton opened with a very fair attack, and with a fair body of tone, though not quite so good as No 2. (Denuiston): "In this respeot a good side-drummer, .the euphonium and first baritone were doing good work. Trio Ito 4 was very well played. The B-flat melody: The cornets at bars 5 to 8 were not strictly in tune. The same remark applies to bars 21 and 22. Nevertheless the Baud was playing very well. The soprano was doing good work at bars 27 to 30 in the repeat. At bars 55 and on the horns were a shade out of tune, but were much better at 26 aud on. The drums' were doing good work. At trio 5 and ou the counter subject for the baritones, euphonium, etc., was very effective; The Baud was playing very well, The Baud now come to a halt. Ihere is correct weight of tone for M.F. at 19 and on. The attack at 35 aud on is very fine • indeed; "ores'' bars 46 and 48 very well managed. "The body of tone and balauoe is not quite so good as No. 2 (Denniston)," said the judge, "but, taking into consideration the difficulty of this march, as compared with that played by No. 2, I award them one point more in music. Taken as a whole, it was a very good performance of a difficult march. Points 77, first prize."
