A DASTARDLY ACTION.

ATTEMPT TO WRECK A TRAIN

INVERCARGILL, February 8. A deliberate attempt was made to derail the South bound express between Kaihiku and Waiwera last night. Bars of iron were laid across the metals and also a mile post a little distance away. The latter was lashed with wire secured to wedges driven into the sleepers. Driver Moloney felt the engine pass over the obstructions, and pulled up sharp. No damage was done, and tbe train proceeded after a wire and broken post were taken from under the gear of the engine. The railway at the place runs through a flat, and it is said that two horsemen galloped away just before tbe tain paused, but the police are inclined to think tbe act was the work of boys. The method of fixing the obstruction indicate older heads, and some experience.
