BOROUGH COUNCIL.
WORKS COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Borough Gounoil as a Works Committee was held last evening. The Mayor presided, and the other members present were— Crs Elliott, Temple, Eton, Ewington, Sleist, MoEwen, and Pauling. Mr H. E. Andrews waited on Committee, and again urged that the drainage be extended along Cornwall Street to his house. He was willing to pay half the cost, which he understood, would be about £2O. . The Engineer pointed out that the oost would be about £2O. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Fei9t, the offer of Mr Andrews* was accepted unanimously. • The question of the difference on the railway freight on New Zealand and imported coal was discussed, \ and it was decided that the Council ; protest, in con junction with the Chamber of Commerce, against the extra charge for freight on imported coal. v Concerning the question uf widening Michael Street, the Town Clerk was instructed to draw up a petition to the Counoil, and give it to Mr Dixon to obtain tha signatures of the property owners in the street. E. J. Kimber wrote asking the Committee to make allowance forcartage of, as he had overlooked it in the specifications that delivery would be made at the gasworks, in his Pine Street contract. The mitfcee decided that they could uotr see their way to recommend the al» lowance being made. H. R. Wood wrote asking that the gas be extended along Renall Street to his residenoe. The Engineer stated that the oost would be about £l2O. It was decided that the Committee favourably consider the extension out of. the loan money. It was decided to extend the water along Hogg Crescent to Mr Betty's and the Bowling Green. The Committee decided to visits the Makora Creek Bridge in Cornwall Street and ascertain what work is required to be done. The Engineer was instructed to report at the next meeting of the Committee on tho automatic lighters and lanterns for same; also the estimated cost of extending the large arc lamps in Queen Street; also on the question of the lamD-lighting contract. The matter of prosecuting Dorsons who have failed to connect their pro pertiea with the drainage system was left in the hands of the Mayor and 1 the Town Clerk. Accounts amounting to £916 10a, Id were passed for payment.
