BANQUET AT PONGAROA.

PAHIATUA, January 29

The Premier left Pahiatua for Pongaroa on Saturday morning, reaohing there about 4 p.m. A deputation waited on him to ask for a Government grant of £5,000 for the Mangatiti-Pongaroa road. Mr Seddon replied that the Government could not give settlers £5,000, but would lend them £2,500 at a low rate of interest, and the matter of a Government subsidy would be laid before his colleagues. Deputations from the tradespeople,' Weber County Council, and Pahiatua Chamber of .Commerce also waited upon him. Mr Beddon was entertained at a banquet at Porigaroß, and addressed a large publio meeting for two hours in the evening. A vote of thanks to the Premier and confidence in the Government was carried unanimously.
