MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
a FIRE BRIGADE AND LIBRARY COMMITTEE. The meeting of tbe Borough Council Fire Brigade and Library Committee, last evening, was attended by Crs Elliott (chairman), and Hoar. Tbe Town Clerk reported that the form of .application for subsidy \had been filled in, and forwarded to the Minister of Education. It is expected that the subsidy this year will be about £l7. The Librarian's report for the month showed that there was 4,897 books in the Library, inohiding 3,779 works of fiction; 1743 books had been lent during tbe month, of which 1,726 were works of fiction. The total number of subscribers to the Library was 296. The subscriptions amounted to £4 ss. The Committee inspected the new reading stands, and decided to have tho edges removed from two of them to accommodate the extra long newspapers; and, also, to have the old stand fitted up in a similar manner to the new stands. The Town Clerk reported on the May-Qatway system of electric fire alarms now in use In Ohri9tchurcb, and stated that Superintendent Smith, of the Ohristchuroh Fire Brigade, had promised to send some particulars regarding motor traction for hose reels, but strongly advised that no aotion be taken until the International Exhibition, at Christohurob, is opened, as the very latest improvements in these and other motor fire brigade carriages would be shown.
