It is feared that the steamer Soot, which is overdue from Japan, foundered during a heavy typhoon, whioh was raging just before she was due at Ocean Island. Mr R. Jaques, of Te Ore Ore, has one of the finest collections of dahlias. in the Wairaiapa district. A large number of the blooms are now out in flowor, and present a very pretty appearance. Mr Jaques has about 97 different varieties of dahlias. The entries reoeived by the Wairarapa Amateur Athletic Olub for , their meetiug on Monday next constitute a decided reoord for the Wairarapa. Arrangements have been made by Mr J. L. Gonlau for the Wellington competitors, numbering 30, and the Hutt competitors, numbering seven, to stay at the Prince of Wales 1 Hotel during their visit to Masterton. They will arrive on Saturday. The quantity of wool consigned from the Masterton Railway Station from November 7tb to January 6th was 6050 bales, and for the week ending January 13th, 900 bales. Advices from Noumea state that though the plague is decreasing there are still some cases. There have been several deaths, including two or three Europeans. The Ground Committee of the Masterton Raoing Club will meet on the course at 10 o'clock this morning to inspect the various improvements that are being carried out. Two applications for the renewal pf the Old Age Pension wore granted by Mr W. P. James, S.M., yesterday. No fresn applications have yet beea dealt with this year, but there are several cn hand. The Borough poundkeeper, Mr C. H. Savage, reported to last night's meeting of the Counoil, that during the month of December there had been no impoundings by the Borough ranger, three by the County ranger, one by a private party. Messrs Walsh and Co., having abandoned the contract of winding and keepii.g in repair the Town Clock, the Borough Council last evening decided fcu aoceot the next tender, which was £ll Is, £lO for the Town ' Clock and £1 Is for the office docks, that of Mr JR. Ashton. The Borougn Council last evening appointed the Mayor to represent the Council at the meeting of local bodies of the Wairarapa on February 24th, for the purpose of arranging for providing and maintaining hospitals in the Wairarapa district. Before the Mayor took the chair at the Masterton Borough Counoil last evening, it was decided on the motion of Or MoEweu, that a letter of condolence be forwarded to the Mayor in relation to his recent sad bereavement. Several Councillors spoke in sympathetic terms oa the motion. This evening Mr Harry Pearoe, Australasia's ohampion wrestler, will give an exhibition in the Foresters' Hall, at 8.30 o'clock, and a watch for £lO aside will also take plaoe. The contest is with , Harry Sandow, and the Australian undertakes to throw the New Zealander three times in an hour. The Borough Counoil, at their meeting last evening, decided that Thursday afternoon should be the statutury half-holiday for the ensuing year. The motion was passed without any discussion, but afterwards one Councillor remarked: "It's no use arguing or trying to alter the day. For myself I prefer Saturday." Another Councillor agreed with the previous speaker. The following notification of appointment of delegates from the various Councils to vote ■at the election of a member of the Wellington Harbour Board, on Febru? ary 12th, were received at the Borough Counoil meeting last even-ing:—-Pahiatua Borough, Mr Da* id Crewe; Featherston County, Mr Alfred Matthews; Greytown Borough Mr Charles E. Danieli; Wairarapa South County, Mr Williair Perry; Masterton County, Mr O. E. Cook-barn-Hood. The Masterton Borough Council appointed the Mayor to represent the Council, The fortnightly meeting of the Stonehengq Lodge of Druids was held in the Foresters' Hall last evening, Bro. J. G. Miller, A.D., presiding. Four new members were proposed for membership, and one member was initiated into the mystries of Druidism by Bro, Miller, A.D., ably assisted by Bro. W. Moore, P.A. The business of the evening was of an interesting character, consisting chiefly of a question box. The question of forming a Koyal Arch Chapter in connection with this Lodge was discussed. Holloway insert a notice of thanks for the numerous expressions of sympathy reoeived by them in connection with their recent bereavement. The Mauricevllle County Council will oonsider the question of the statutory weekly half-holiday at a special meeting of the Council on the 27th ihstant. As the end of the summer season is within sight Messrs Maogregor | and Co. announoe that all their millinery will be disposed of at half price, and at the same time the firm intimate that trimming will be done free of charge. A partnership has been entered into between Messrs H. E. Andrews and H. W. ftißhworth, late of Auckland. Their business of dental surgeons will in future be carried on under the style of Andrews and Rishworth, at Masterton and Carterton. Messrs E. J. Carthew and Co., land agents, of New Plymouth, advertise particulars of several farm properties which have been placed in their hands for sale. All the properties are highly improved, and are situated close to creameries on good roads, and aro good remunerative Investments.
