OTAGO UNIVERSITY.
SCHEME FOS A DENTAL SCHOOL AND HOSPITAL. DUNEDIN, January 8. At a meeting of the Council of Otago University a report was submitted by a sub-committee appointed to consider the question of the proposed dontal school. The report states:—lt may be necessary to make some modification in locture coursea to meet the special need of dental students, but it cannot be determined till the New Zealand University bas re-considered the conditions for dental degree. It will be necessary to add dental surgery, mechanics, metallurgy, and operative dentistry, and to provide this there would be required a principal, who would also lecture, at a salary of, say, £SOO per annum; a mechanic*, at, say, £200; and a boy at £3O. A committee of dentists bas given an assurance that the dentists would find sis honorary dental surgeons, and necessary extra lecturers. They will also find £IOOO for the dental hospital. It is believed the Government will give the usual subsidy of 24s in the £l. ~ It seems a matter of urgency that provision be made immediately for the training of dental students. The oommittee reoommends that the whole matter be placed before the Government, and that it be asked to advise Parliament to provide a subsidy of 24s in £1 up to £ISOO of local contributions, and sufficient annual grants to meet the necessary yearly expenditure; that a site be provided for a dental hospital; that the New Zealand University be urged to reconsider the provision of dental degree at the earliest opportunity, and generally to get the department in working order. The report was adopted and a committee selected to arrange a dental ourriculum.
