In his annual report the Comptrol-ler-General of Prisons (Weatorn Australia), Mr Oct. Burt, makes reference to a brave deed by an aboriginal nativo prisoner named "Cudgel." Mr Burt states:— The aboriginal native prisoner "Cadgel," at Eottnest, was instrumental in saving the life of a fellow prisoner, a white man, at the risk of losing his own. The man, whilst bathing with his party on the west sido of the Island, was drawn amongst the rocka of the reef by the baok-wasb of the surf, and would inevitubly have been drowned had not the native "Cudgel" immediately swam out to his rescue. The man was insensible when rescued. I submitted the native's namo to the Royal Humane Society, but was informed that the 90oeity did "not give awards to prisoners." Why an act, when performed by a prisoner, should not, be deemed as meritorious and deserving of the same reward as it would be considered to be if - performed by a free man, I do not pretend to understand.
