A meeting of Trustees of the. North Wairarapa Benevolent Society will be held in Messrs Lotfes and lorns' roomh on Wednesday next, at 3.30 p.m. A meeting of the shareholders of the Workmen's Friend Building Society will be held in tho Fire Police Station at 8 o'clock this evening. Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., yesterday removed into the offices formerly occupied by Lowes j and lorns, where they will conduct their Masterton business from today. A man named Timothy Olliver, wnile wrestling with another man last evening, accidentally fell and broke his leg. He was removed to the Hospital, and the limb was set by Dr A. Hosking. Our Eketahuna correspondent writes: "News has been received in town of the death at Wellington of a well-known and highly-respected settler of Nireaha, in the person of Mr Taft." The exact amount realised in gate money, including grandstand receipts, at the Caledonian Sports on New Years Day, was £197 16s, and the receipts of the concert were £7O 13s. A contributor to the New Zealand Herald writes:— "Wairarapa" means glinting wavelets; this 1 learnt in after years, but as it is the custom of the pakeha to distort the euphony of native names, I aped the fashion, and called it "Waidrup." The names of the crew of the scow Oban, who are supposed to have been washed off and drowned near Wellington Heads, are:— Donald W. McKenzie, aged 40; Captain O. Johnson, aged 25; A. Martin, aged 31, A.B. At the Tauherenikau races yesterday the hurdle horse Numa, owned by Mr W. Pirie, was sub* mitted by auction by Mr 0. R, Wood after the Tauanui Haok Hurdle Handicap, and sold to Mr H. Ray, of Petone, for £7O. The Shaw, Savill and Albioa steamer Athenic, whioh arrived on Monday morning from England, brought 537 passengers in all classes for New Zealand ports. She also had' on board three prize stud rams from England for Mr Wheeler, of Palmerston North. The improvements recently effected by the Wairarapa Racing Club at their course at Tauherenikau were highly spoken of by visitors at tho meeting on Monday and Tuesday. It waß considered that some of the arrangements are not excelled by any olub in the colony. A wrestling match tock place at ( Dunediu last night between J. H, Tonkin, of Victoria, aud JR. J. Scofet, for £SO and the championship of New Zealand in catcb-as:catoh-can style. Scott secured two falls, and won He then challenged Weber, the winner at the Caledonian Sports during the day.-—"Association. 1 Mr Will Lawrence arrived in Masteiton last night to n.ake arrangements for the forthcoming visit to Masterton of Ozerny, the conjuror and illusionist, who has been so pronouncedly successful in Wellington. Mr M. Josephs, representing Mr William Anderson, under whose auspices Ozerny is touring, will arrive in Masterton, in the course of a few days. A meeting of Stonehenge Lodge A.O.D. was held last evening, when Bro. J. G. Miller presided over a large attendance. Seasons greetings were received from various Lodees, and accounts amounting to £8 were passed for payment. Two friends were proposed as members of the Order, and a syllabus for the ensuing year was drawn tip. After some routine business had been transacted the meeting adjourned, Mr John Stevens, M.H.R., oontraliots the report which has been circulated that he is about to resign his seat in the House through illhealth. Mr Stevens says that but for the sudden death of his opponent he would ere now have visited the different parts of the electorate to receive the congratulations of his supporters. He is as well as he was during the contest and has no intention whatever of resigning. Shortly before 11 o'clook yesterday morning a fire broke out in a shed adjoining a house ocoupied by Mrs Lee, on a section owned by Mr Z. M. Hoar, in Hope Street. The shed, which was used by Messrs Hartmann, Hoar and Permam for storing flax, was completely demolished, and it was only by the prompt action of the Fire Brigade that the house was saved. There were no insurances, and the cause of the outbreak is set down to the spontaneous combustion of the flax. Dr Van Slyke, specialist, of Wel- ! lington, will visit Masterton on Wednesday, January 10, and may be consulted at the Club Hotel. Miss Malcolm will open her bearding and day school in Masterton for the higher education of girls at the beginning of February next, and will meet parents and intending pupils at the Ranfurly Club after January 16. A reward is offered for the recovery of a lady's short black mantle, a youth's overcoat, and a young lady's long green coat, lost on Boxing Day from the 7 o'clook train from Wellington. The articles ware missed between Olareville and Masterton. MERIT BE WARDED BY COURT O JUSTICE.
