SOCCER.
Upper Hutt United, I; Technical Old Boys, 2. In the opening stages Hoey drove in a hard shot which was well held by Old Boys keeper. Old Boys fought back gamely forcing an unproductive corner, Marsden bringing off a fine save from a dangerous
shot by Old Boys' centre. Another raid by Old Boys looked dangerous for Upper Hutt, but fine defensive play prevented Old Boys from getting- in a shot. Back came Upper Hutt and persistent pressure kept Old Boys' defenders busy. A little more steadiness in front would have given Upper Hutt the lead, but it was left to Old Boys to open the scoring. During a spasmodic raid their centre received the ball and shooting with power from close in scored just before the interval. On resuming Upper Hutt opened with plenty of dash, Old Boys' goalkeeper having to handle in the first minute after a fine run by Goodwin on the right wing. Upper Hutt were now serving up a dazzling display and rarely did they give the Old Boys' defence much respite and
they got their due when Kelly ran in and shooting- on the run, scored with a powerful left-foot drive. Just before the final whistle Old Boys surprised the home defence and scored the winning g:oal. Unsteadiness in front of their opponents' g'oal was one of the factors of Upper Hutt's defeat.
