MAIDSTONE PARK.
Sir, — Your correspondent, Mr. W. S. Keegan, has asked the Upper Hutt Borough Ratepayers' and Citizens' Association to explain a certain statement made in the "Weekly Review" of November 26th, 1937, with reference to Maidstone Park. In reply we wish to state that we consider the present position is not a suitable place for a recreation ground. It is right at the end of the borough and too far away from Silverstream for Heretaunga residents to take any interest in it. It is obvious to all that people coming from Wellington by train have to walk to the nearest railway crossing, which is about a quarter of a mile from the entrance to the grounds, or trespass by crossing the railway line at the station, -which, in our opinion is most undesirable and dangerous, especially for children. As far as the ground is concerned it is very rough and stoney, making it a costly proposition for improvements to be made. Being situated under the hills it is cold and -wet during the winter. We consider there are more suitable grounds that could be secured in a position giving easier access from all parts of the borough and at the same time enabling it to be laid out in a more modern manner, suitable for all classes of sport and amusements. The total cost of the ground and lay-out should not exceed half the price it is proposed to pay for Maidstone Park.—l am, etc. A. F. W. JACKSON.
