RUBBISH REMOVAL
Councillor Keys stated that if the rubbish removal came into operation at 10/- or 12/- there will be a great deal of dissention. He would suggest that ratepayers be asked to contribute voluntarily to the scheme instead of forcing everyone into it. Councillor Baskett stated that the unempoyed ratepayer could not afford any more rates, as it was hard enough to find them now, and with extra rates it would be impossible to pay. Councillor Blewnian: I congratulate Councillor Greig on the good work he has done, but numerous ratepayers had approached him asking: that the Council should not enforce this on them. Councillors Howell and Guthrie also concurred with the previous Councillors on the subject. Councillor Greig: I would like to point out to the ■ Council that it was .not my scheme, but as Chairman of the Public Services Committee it was our business to go into the matter. The Inspector had only one view when he brought this matter- forward and that was the health of the people of this district. Councillor Gi-eig said he -was quite prepared that a referendum of the l-ate-payers be taken on the matter. After further discussion this was agreed to. The Council went into Committee at 12.10 a.m.
