Waitahuna West Presbyterian Church.
CHURCH SOCIAL. A very successful Church social took place iu the Waitahuna West Presbyterian Church on Friday last, August 15th. The Rev. E. Bandy occupied the chair, and a splendid programme- uf musical items and addresses were
given. In his opening remarks, the ihairau expressed his pleasure at being present, and congratulated the congregation on the social function. He heartily believed in the cultivation of the social side of church life, and felt it was a means of the enrichment of friendships. He was glad to see such a good number of returned soldiers present. and thought it was a good omen for the district, when, after the sufferings and hardships of battle, such men came back lo the fellowship of the Church. Mr Bandy, in closing, said he would spend a week among them in visitation as soon as the weather and the roads permitted it.
Mr Robert McCaw (session clerk) in a short address, extended a warm welcome to the Kev. E. and Mrs Bandy to the Waitahuna congregation, and trusted that their united service would prove a blessing to both old and young. Passing to his brief address, Mr McCaw spoke on the claims of the new times occasioned by the war. Some thought that, as it affected the Church t''e Church must forsake her spiritual vocation, and become a social movoWith this lie did not agree. The Church's supreme work was spiritual ; it was not a new gospel that was needed, but a better understanding and application of the old.
During tlio evening the Waital.una Choir rendered very effectively several anthems under the able leadership of Mr Tt. Rtenhouse. Solos were rendered by Mr Murray and Rev. 15. Bandy, duets by Mrs Murray and Miss Wilde. Mesdames Rtenhouse and Bandy, and Rev E. and Mrs Bandy: recitation by Ethel Webster; readings by Miss Rosedale and Rev. E. Bandy ; while the Sunday School children of Waitaliuna West Church sang two choruses. Votes of thanks were proposed to the speakers by Mr F. Bishop ; to the Waitahuna Choir by Mr Webster, and to the chairman by Mr Selbie. After the Benediction was pronounced by tlie chairman, the gathering was regaled by delicious refreshments tastefully served up by the ladies. Eive cars returned through the mud and mire of the West road, bearing home safely the party, after negotiating slippy hills and greasy bends of what is apologetically called a road.
