BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of th» Lawrence. Borough Council wei held oh Monday night. Present— His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. B. MeKinluy), Or* Leary, Christie, Thompson, Winn, Fiulayson, and Arthur. Apologies were received for the absence of Crs. Munro, Edie, and Simpson.
Condolence and Sympathy. Before taking up the ordinary business of the meeting the Mayor feelingly referred to the deaths of Sergt. E. R. Talboys and Private Lionel Taylor. The fathers of these lads had for many years been residents of our town and taken a kocn interest in its welfare. Mr G. 0. Taylor had occupied the position of Mayor and Mr Talboys-had for years been their representative on the Charitable Aid Board. He moved—'' That the sympathy of this Council be extended to the families and relatives of Messrs Talboys and Taylor in the bereavement they had suffered, and that a copy of the motion be forwarded to each family." The motion was carried by members standing in silence for a few moments.
Correspondence. From J. H. Pearson, advising that he had transferred bis interest in corporation section 14, block XIII., to Mr Patrick Mclnerney.—Noted. From John J. Woods, in reply to Council's letter re topping of Hospital trees", stating Hint instructions had been given lo have the matter attended to.Received.
From T. Pilling, secretary Tuapeka Domain Board, thanking the Council on its gift of a ladder, which would be useful for building a stile for the convenience of ratepayers and others who may have occasion In visit the old racecourse at any time. —Received.

From li. T. .Sudd, Commissioner of Crown Lands, staling lhat he was prepared to recommend Hint, an urea of about li poles be set apart as desired as a plantation, and asked to he supplied with a survey ; also staling that the Department had no objection to the selling apart of about three acres of laud at Lawrence as a reserve for the deposit of refuse provided they had a survey made of the ;\ren.—Received, and referred to the Reserves Committee.
Accounts, . The following accounts were passed for payment :
The head surfaceman reported that during the past two weeks he had cleaned the footpaths in Peel, Oban, Kilmarnock, .Sandy, .Stranraer, and Harrington streets ; trimmed the laurels and opened and filled in one section in the Cemetery. Cr. Winn (Chairman of the Cemetery Committee) reported that he had arranged with the second surfaceman to undertake the grave digging ; that the Cemetery for this lime of tho year was in good order ; and that the building was in need of some repairs. He also reported with regret that two specially choice rose;) had been stolen from the 'grave of the late Edward Gunton. ft was, he said, the first occasion thut lie knew of flowers or shrubs having been removed, and he thought it a dastardly action, and he hoped some stops would be taken to got on tho track of the person who "was guilty of so contemptible an act. —The Mayor and Cr. Leary also expressed their abhorrence of so despicable an action and it was resolved to ask the Police to make an effort to lind out the perpetrator and make an example of him or her.
THE FIRST NEW ZEALAND CASUALTY. Wellington, July it). Who was the tirsl new Zealander to fall at Oallopoli. This question has for some lime engaged the attention of T. K, Sidey, who, since coming to Wellington, has made careful inquiries as to whether the late Private "W. V. Knight, of Waipori, was tho first casualty from the Dardanelles lo be reported in New Zealand. After numerous inquiries, including a communication with the Australian Defence authorities, Mr Sidey has established the fact beyond dispute. Tho announcement that Private ICnighl, of the First Australian Infantry Battalion, had been killed in action was undoubtedly the first casualty notified to the New Zealand authorities.
