Mr A. E. J. Blakeley's next professional visit will be on Thursday, 27th July. The Rev. Mr Duncan, who is at present in charge of a Methodist circuit in the neighbourhood of Palmerston North and who was the Rov. Mr Keen's predecessor in the Lawrcnco circuit, is at present in this district on a health recruiting mission. At present he is the guest of Mr and Mrs John Uren, Bluo Spur. Mr Chns. Bogg, of Messrs C. Begg & Co., Ltd., manager of tho firm's business, died in Dunodin on Thursday morning. Tho deceased, who was 43 years of age, was in his übubl health on Saturday but on Sunday night had to be operated on for appendicitis. On this peritonitis supervenod and he died as stated. Ho was the youngest son of tho founder of this popular musical firm and was regarded as an ideal business man. A very pleasant social evening was given to Scrgt. Sutherland on Thursday litli inst. under tho auspices of the Patriotic Committee (writes our correspondent. Mr V. Whelan (Chairman of Committee) presided and introduced a full programme of music and song, aud as nearly every item was encored it was a late hour when the speakers for the evening were introduced. Sutherland and said if all the men of tho Empire were liko him the war would soon be over. Ho was particularly hard on the Quakers who were willing to have their homes defended but would not lift a hand in defence themselves. Tea and cakes wore handed round and an enjoyable ovening spent. During the past week the staff and pupils of the Lawrence Distrist High School have been making a special effort in aid of the Belgian Helief Fund. Money bottles on the mautlepieces of the various eliiHruoms collected tho spare pence and voluntary earnings of many of the scholars. Others contributed gifts in kind, such as garden and dairy produce, which found a ready sale among scholars and friends. The effort culminated in an impromptu concert held in the wood-work room on Thursday afternoon to which for lid aud Id pupils alone were admitted and which pupils practically of their own accord contributed the items. The total proceeds amounted to £l3 Bs. Mr George Bulfin, who after a succesl'ul run of some years as a building contractor in this district, went north and took up a 1000 acre bush farm iu the King Country, is at present spending a holiday with his people in Lawrcnco and Tnapeka West. He is just out of the Wuikuto Hospital where he spent three months us a result of a serious accident. it seems he was building a sheep bridge for a neighbor when a heavy log came down on him. it was u close cull but with his naturally robust constitution he has made a good recovery, and hopes that a month or more iu our bracing climate aud among congenial surroundings will thoroughly restore him to his former health. But for the accident Georgo would have been away to tho front with the May draft of reinforcements.
