CLOSER SETTLEMENT.

GOVERNMENT ACTIVITY. WELLINGTON, July 13. The Government have authorised tha purchase of the Sherenden Estate, of about 8300 acres, in Hawko's'Bay. It is owned by Mr J. Itethbridge, and 80 per cent, of the estate is ploughable land. Tho Government have also given instructions for the examination of half a dozen other estates, with a view to acquisition by the crown.

Asked if land legislation is likely this session, Mr Massey replied: "There will/be land legislation this session. I am noit prepared to say whether we shall have time to pass policy questions on that matter, but there must be legislation on certain matters of detail that will have to be dealt with by statute."
