The Aeon Wrecked.
ASHORE OX CHRISTMAS ISLAND. ALL HANDS SAVED. SUVA, Sept. 19. The Aeon was wrecked on July 18 on the south-east point of Christmas 'Island. All hands (some 50, including four ladies and two children), also 500 bags of mails, were saved. Among" the cargo were oil engines for launches, one of which was fitted into a boat as auxiliary. Five men started for Fanning Island but they encountered bad weather, and the boat was damaged, so <fchey returned to Christmas Island, refitted, and sailed again last Wednesday. The boat arrived at Panning Island to-day with the Captain, second officer, two engineers, and some seamen. The people camping on Christmas Island are getting water frcm the ship. They have six months' rations /find two sheep. A house was built for the ladies. SYDNEY, ftcpt, 20. ; The ship is n total wreck, and her lower holds arc full of water. Heavy weather has prevailed since the wreck occurred. and it is- feared that salvage operations would be useless. The boat took four days to reach Fan nine Island. The Manuka is due at Fanning Is- ' land on Tuesday, and will be instructed to pick up the castaways.
