The entries for the Sheffield Handicap at the Caledonian Society's gathering on Boxing day not being sufficiently numerous to justify the expenditure of so large an amount in one event, the committee met on Thursday evening and, in accordance with the powers provided by the Society's rules, decided to erase this event from the piogramme and substitute three running events of 100 yds, 120 yds, and 150 yds with prizes of £2and£lforeach. The Customs statistics show that the average value of tea imported into New Zealand is 29 percent higher than in Australia and 21 per cent higher than in England. This proves that the residents of the Dominion are getting better quality tea than are the people in Australia and England. Messrs Nelson, Moate and Co*, Ltd-, attained their position as the largest importers of tea in New Zealand by always giving good quality, and they maintain that it is due to their having done so that the average value of tea imported is so much ahead of Australia and England.

The lantern entertainment given at Clue Spur and Lawrence Methodist Churches on Monday and Tuesday evenings respectively, in aid of Foreign Missions were well patronised. The slides shown represented a tour round the world in 100 minutes. Very good descriptive reaclings and humorous talk& were given by the lecturer, who threw on to the sheet some very excellent views of many of the principle cities in Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Australasia. A number of amusing and funny characters weie also shown to interest the children. The programme was interspersed with songs " The village blacksmith," by Mr Belworthy, and "Daddy "and " Ora pro nobis " by Mibs Ethel Pilling, and the recitation " Curfew shall not ring to-night" by Mr P Uren and Mr R Pilling, all of which were well rendered. A hearty vote of thanks was given to Mr Grittiu for his very enjoyable entertainment, and also to those who so ably gave local aid. The singing of the old hundreth hymn and the benediction brought a most pleasant meeting to a close.

We have received a letter from Mr E. Fahey, foreman of the jury empannelled to make enquiry into the circumstances attending the death of Edward Burnside at Evans Flat on the 11th inst., in which exception is taken to our leaderette in last issue animadverting on the verdict and the rider accompanying it. All the evidence led at the inquest, Mr Fahey points out, tended to show that Messrs Ward Bros, kept their plant in first-class order, that no complaints had been made or heard concerning the working of the mill, and that Messrs Ward carefully studied the interests of their workmen in every conceivable way. The rider, apart from the verdict, was framed in general terms with the object of drawing the attention of those in authority to the need of flaxmilling plant being frequently inspected, and also to the advisability of properly safeguarding the scutching plant, so as to remove, or at least minimise, the possibility of accident. We have also Mr Fahey's assurance that the question of avoiding the giving of offonee to Messrs Ward never entered the minds of the jurymen; for, after visiting the scene of the accident and listening closely to the evidence adduced, they were unanimously of opinion that no blame could rest on the shoulders of Ward Bros. so far as the accident was concerned.

The Lyric Quartet Party's concert on Wednesday evening attracted a fair audience and, judging by the demonstrations of approval and the numerous recalls, the audience were highly satisfied with the programme submitted. The concerted items were " Stars of a Summer night," " Hail smiling morn," " The three chafers," " Oft in ;the stilly night," " Hail to the chief," "We are all Scottish here," " The red sun is sinking" and "Return soft gentle evening." In all of these items the voices were nicely balanced and there was, as a result, perfect harmony the audience at the conclusion of each giving unmistakeable evidence of their apprecia-~ tion. Mr Campbell was in particularly good voice and his fine singing of " Bonnie Prince Charlie" and " I'll sing thee songs of Araby " elicted undeniable recalls to which he responded by singing " Let me like a soldier fall " and "Mary." Mr J. B. M'Clyniont's contributions were " The Deathless Army" (encore "The Trumpeter ") and " Claude Duval " (encore "The Highlandman's toast,") Mr M'Clymont, in addition to being the possessor of a fine baritone voice has also the gift of a clear and distinct enunciation and gives a fine interpretation of the spirit of his songs. Mr Johnston, in addition to singing " The Admiral's broom " (encore " The dear Irish girl ") in fine style, also contributed a violin solo "Un Soir a Portica " and a recitation "A household awakening" (encore " The Irish Fire Brigade." Mr J. Aruott contributed a Scotch comic item to each part of the programme and had to respond to an encore on each occasion. The aceonipaniments were tastefully, played by Miss J. Hay and Mr Johnston." Mr E- M. Bundle, surgeon dentist, visits Lawrence every second Thursday, and may be consulted at Mr E. A. Manning's, chemist, Ross Place, Lawrence.
