During the past week the rainfall in this distiict has been very heavy. According to Mr Jeffery's gauge 2.S inches have fallen since Saturday morning labt. There were six patients in the Tu.ipek.i Hospital last evening— three male and three female. Two patients were admitted during the week and one discharged. THE Revs. J. J. Pendray, of Lawrenc<\ and J. W. Grifi'eu, of Milum, exchange appointments on Sunday next. The Rev. Griffen, yives a popular lantern lec-tuie in aid of Foreign Missions in Blue Spur Methodist Church on Monday evening-and in the Lawrence Methodist Church on Tuesday evening, when largo are expected.

A Waipoei correspondent writes. : —Not to be behind the times one of our local residents, Mr W Wilson, lias invested in an np-to-date motor car which he brought to Waipori at the beginning of this week As there has been only one oLhor motor car (that of Mr J H Smith, of Gore) seen in this district it attracted quite a lot of ,ittencion. Mr Wilson obliging gave a ride

to anybody who desired it.

INTENDING competitors at the Tuapeka Caledonian Society's gathering on Bo.\in» Bay are reminded that entries for the Sheffield .Handicap, the three prize.-, for which total £21, and other events, close with the secretary on Wednesday evening, 18th inst.

Thk quarterly meeting of the Tuapeka Licensing Committee was held at Roxburgh on Thursday. Before dealing with the business before the meeting, feeling rofwence was made to the great loss tlie committee had suffered through the death of Mr Hugh Craig, whose knowledge of every hotel in the district, said the chairman, had proved of great service to them in the past. It was resolved to forward a letter of sympathy to Mrs Craig. Mr A. Fraser, Forsyth, appointed to the vacancy cruised by the death of Mr Craig, took his sent. A number of transfers applied for were granted, as also were conditional licenses for race meeting at Alexandra and Tuapeka Agricultural Show.

Lionel Terry, who escaped from Seacliff Asylum three weeks ago, was re-cip-tured on Wednesday morning by Constables Kidd (Waikouaiti) Pond aud Bvien (Dunedin) on the Ben Doran station about 15 miles inland from Waikouaiti. He had been located and spoken to on the previous afternoon by the police who were mounted, a ience intervening, but had eluded them by getting iuLo a thick clump of bush.

As will be seen by our advertising columns, Mr G. W. Johnstone, representing " Johnstones," the progressive and up-to-date house-furnishers will be in Lawrence from Tuesday 17th till Thursday 19th at 3 p.m. with samples of their well-known furniture of every description. This is an opportunity which is seldom given, and those who are in need of really good furnitire at a low price should not miss it. Mr Jonstone also brings a splendid collection of oil paintings which will be on view and for sale at astonishingly-loAV prices. " The Afterglow," by Veitch, is a picture that has attracted a lot of attention wherever shown. Private appointments may be made by letter with Mr Johntone. It came as a pleasant surprise to the members of the Amateur Athletic Club on Tuesday evening last to find that the public, at so early a stage of the club's existence, are taidng a lively interest in its evening meetings. Despite the steady downpour of rain, there must have been over 100 risitors, including several ladies. The band also helped, and by its items did much to render the meeting highly enjoyable. Only two of the races were run, the School boys' race and the 2 miles flat. The first event was run in three heats, the first three in each, heat running in the final. Black, the winner, had no difficulty in winning both his heat and the final, and should certainly be heard of again, as he is just of the build for a sprinter. Richards; also ran well. The two niile proved an exciting race. The limit men, Wuir (120 yards) and Moore (100 yarJs) set a great pace for the first half-mile, but the scratch man, Jones, commenced gradually to pull up, coming up with the others at the end of the first mile, which was cut out in 5 mm. ssec. Wurr then continued to lead until about 200 yards from the tape, when Jones set up a great sprint winning easily from Wurr by about 20 yards, Moore a similar distance from Wurr. Jones ran a fine race, especially so as he was suffering from slight ptomaine poisoning. He has a fine, free style, and his time of lOmin. 57 4-ssec. stamps him aS a tine distance runner. Wurr seems to have lost little of his old pace, and ran a plucky race right throughout. Moore also was close up, bat in the final lap lost ground, wnich he was unable to recover. Owing to the lack of competitors the 220 yards open was not competed for, although an exhibition race was run, JStrachan winning in the good time of 24 seconds.

I On account of the Christmas and New Year holidays Mr Blakeley's next dental visit to Lawrence will be on Thursday, 9th January. The Rev. R. Scott Allan is paying his, half-yearly visit to the Beaumont charge, where he dispenses the Communion to-mor-row.

MR GeOKGE ROKKRTSON, son of Mr

Alex. Robeitson, Lawrence, who has been connected with the Government Life Insurance Office for the past 15 years, has just resigned in order to accept an appointment with the Royal Insurance Co., as an inspector in the accident branch of that Co. 's business in Wellington. The Patangata County Council (North Island) has forwarded the following resolution passed by that body to the Chairman of the Tuapeka County Council and solicits its co-operation and approval : — " It being reported that Mr Keir Hardie intends shortly to visit the Dominion of New Zealand, and in view of bis recent utterances whilst in India, this council is strongly of opinion that he should receive no official i recognition in his public capacity as a member of the British Legislature from any local body in the Dominion." The ratepayers of Gore are, judging by the emphatic manner in which they rejected three special loan proposals last week, apparently quite satisfied with the progress they have already made in preference to a further boom on borrowed money, which invariably means increased rates. The proposal to borrow £6,000 for an up-to-date hall only found 76 supporters, whilst 248 ratepayers voted against it. Extension of water supply (£3,oo'>) was defeated by 198 to 121, and electric light (£1,000) by 180 to 142.

Our readers will be pleased to hear that they will be given another opportunity of hearing the Lyric (juartet Co. in their programme of quartets, solos, violin solos, humorous songs, and recitals. On show night, they re-appear in the Town Hall, and to all who enjoy a good concert, we say " Don't miss them." Since last appearing in Lawrence, the company has been strengthened by the addition of Mr JLittlejohn, and MrJ.Arnott, humorist, and they are better than ever. Mr J B M'Clymont will be heard in baritone solos, and we can promise Mr G W Johnstone a warm welcome when he re-appears with songs, violin and recitals. The combination is exceptionally strong, and we hope to ccc the Town Hall crowded when the curtain goes up.

NoTwrniSTx\.NL>iNG the heavy rain which was falling on Wednesday evening, there was a very good attendance at Perry's Biograph enter Lain menu, the public no doubt having a pleasing recollection of the very satisfactory entertainment given by this company on a previous visit. On this occasion, as on the the previous visit, arrangements had been made to show their moving pictures by means of electric light, the motive power being supplied by a traction engine. Unfortunately, however, it was found, owing to the heavy rain, that the driving belt would not stay on the engine ily wheel, and the company had to fall back on their gas plant for the exhibition of their (me series of pictures. '-This made a great difference in the effectiveness of the display, but the 1 audience recognised the dillicnlty uudm w Inch the company worked, and showed its appieciation of the v any fine films piojected on the screen. The illustrated songs, sung by Miss Eva Brady, wcievery pleasing features of the entertainment, and Atlios on the roller skates was ,-l clover repiesentation or what can be iloncina limited space on the^e usually tieacheious articles. His get up, however, was far from edifying, and, in our opinion, lieti acted very considerably from the merit of tlie performance. The cumiu items of istfin Cluster, whilst apparently meeting with the approval of the boys, were, to say the least, not of a class that commended them to a mixed audience. If it is impossible to h ive this class of item without vuly.uity. then it would, we should say, be much better to eliminate them altogether. The manager announced at the cloae thtit the company would appear in Lawrence in January with an entirely new loL of films '.\ Inch wcie just landing
