THE NAVAL DISASTER.
BRAZILIAN IRONCLAD BLOWN UP. Rio Janeiro, January 23. The Brazilian ironclad Aquidaband's powder magaizne blew up at midnight on Sunday at Jacail Pagna while escorting a Ministerial party aboard the cruiser Barrosoon on a tour of inspection of sites for a naval yard. The Aquidaband sank in three minutes. It is reported that 300 perished. One officer was saved. The drowned include four rearadmirals and a number of naval officers and Government officials who were guests on the Aquidaband. January 24. Ninety-eight of those who were aboard were saved, 212 being lost. New York, January 24. A mystery surrounds the Aquidaband disaster. Those saved are unable to offer any explanation. The New York Herald states that the explosion was caused by a shortcirculated electrical wire. Those on the vessels lying near at hand heard a loud report. The Aquidaband seemed torn asunder and sank immediately without any outcry. Many aboard were asleep.
