LAWRENCE DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

Following is the Inspectors' report on the sohool work for 1903, the number of pupils being 294 ;— Pbimaby Classes. P&SB SObJGOb • Reading, goo& ; spelling an 3 dictation, good ,* writing, good ; arithmetic, very good vcamposition,- satisfactory ;— mean of pass sobjeots, good. Class "subjects : Geography, good ; draw id g, good ; grammar, satisfactory ; history, good ; science and object lessons, satisfactory ; recitation, very good ; handwork, good ;— mean of class subjeots, good. Additional subjeots : Singing, good—Standards II to VI, very good ; needlework, excel; lent ; drill and exercises, good ;— mean of additional subjects, very good. Order, excellent ; attention, excellent ; manners, very good. General result, good. ENGLISH. Class I (pupils, 13).— Work done : Shakespeare's " Hamlet," Goyen's Composition, Macaulay's "Lord Clive" (first half), Dr Smith's Grammar., .Class I passed a good ex-, amiiiation in the work read. Two of the papera were excellent, and only two were below the level of the mark satisfactory. A weak point in the work was punctuation, for . serious errors in which several papers were heavily penalised. Class II < 21).— Shakespeare's "Hamlet," Goyen's Composition, .Dr Smith's Grammar. In the senior division grammar was good and so was composition, except as to punctuation; and most of the questions on the play were satisfactorily answered. The pupils of the junior division (7 in number) showed only meagre knowledge of the play, but most of of them did creditably in grammar and composition, punctuation exoepted. The penmanship of many of the pupils in Class II might well have been better. ABITHMETIO. Class I (11 pupils).— Work done : Civil Ser. vict or E papers. Thtee papers were excellent, seven very good, and one was satisfactory. CIaES II (24).— VI Standard papers. One paper was excellent, 12 were very good, one was good, three were satisfactory, seven weak, and one was very weak. i LATIN. Class I(5 pupils).— Work done : Dr Smith's Bsading-book, History, Books IV and V op to chapter 50, Caesat Book 1 up to chapter. 29, Aden's Grammar; Three papers were excellent and one was good. Class II (10).— Dr Smith's Prinoipia Latina Pt. I, up to exercise 54, Dr Smith's Beadingbook, Fables, and Anecdotes. Two papers were very good, five good, and three satisfactory. Class 111 (10).— Dr Smith's Principia Latina lup (o fourth conjugation, exercise 28. FBENCH. Class I (9 pupils).— Work done : Chardenal's Book I. One paper was excellent, four were very good, one was good, and one fair. Class II (B).— Chardenal's Book 1, 100 exeroises, verb 3 avoir and etre. Four papers were excellent, three good, one was satisfactory, and one weak. ALGEBRA. Class I(4 pupils) Work done :To end of Quadratic Equations. Tile three papers were excellent. Class II (9). — To end of Simultaneous Equations. Six papers were excellent, one was good, two were satisfactory and one was weak. Class 111 (21).— Fractions and Simple Problems (Hamblin Smith). Two papers were excellent, two good, five satisfactory, five fair, and one was weak. . vußiai>. ' Class IUS paplls).— Work done: Books I and 11, Deductions on Books I and 11. One paper was very good, two were good, and one was satisfactory. Class II (11).— Book I, easy Deductions. One paper was very good, three were good, three, satisfactory, three fair, and one was weak. '■ Class 111 (15).— Book I, 26 Propositions. Three papers were good, two satisfactory, six fair, two weak, and one was very weak. GEOGRAPHY. Class I(9 pupils).— Work done : Longman's Book 111 (for Civil Service), HISTORY. Class I(9 pupils).— Work done : A. Buckley's History of England from 1689 to end.
