Following are tbe returns for the week ended Monday, 201 h instant : —

At a meeting of the directors of the Lawrence Gold Dredging Co., held on Monday evening, Mr S. M'Siay, of Lawrence, was appointed dredgemaster, vice Mr A. N. Wakefield, resigned. Mr M'Stay was previously engaged as winebman on the dredge.

The gold brought down country by the escort last week, some £30,000 worth, will be the laßt that will pass through Lawrence. In future the gold escort will reach Dunedin by the Central Ofcago railway. The la9t return of the Magnetic dredge was given to the public as 89 jz, -but it dow turns out that the ao'ual return was only lOuz. Those responsible say the mistake occurred thorough misreading- the code. ' During the week ended Monday, January 20, returns have been reported from 48 dredgps, the total yield being 1,249,'Z lldwi lOgr, or an average of 26 >z p°r dredge.

Qur Dunedin correspondent wired last evening that the river was 7ft lOiu above " normal."

Our Wetherstones correspondent writes : — The Golden Crescnt Co. finished their paddock late on Saturday evening. It turned out better than was expected. They got 38oz, which makes 126 z of gold out of the paddock since they b^gan on November 11th. la 1901 Auckland exported 85,8050z of silver, valued at £10,225, as against 32,7320z, valued at £3,835 in 1900.

During the period commencing December 7 and ending D< oember 31, the Waihi Gold Mining Company's mills were engaged for only 14 days. A total of 6,921 ions was treated in addition to a parcel of slimes, for the splendid return of £29,382. The total output from the mine for the year just closed amounts to £454,386, bringing the gross yi« Id to date to £1.974,512. -

A meeting of the Harris Beach Gold Dredging Company is called for the' 3rd pros., in Lawrence, when the question of going into voluntary liquidation will be again considered.

The Eclipse dredge is at present being taken to the upper end of the claim where she will commenoe operations at the first favorable opportunity. Her ladder having been lengthened it is thougnt she will now bave no difficulty in bottoming.

The Gold Standard claim and machinery were sold in Dunediu last week for £1,225. The pontoons were passed in.

The White Star claim and dredge were passed in, the offer being only £375.

The gold returns for the Auokland district for tho past three weeks (during which time the holiday season has interfered with continuous operations) have reached the satisfactory total of £43,632 83 7d. This brings the total output for 1901, which is still incomplete, to £740,356 17s 9d. Thus, though the complete returns for last year are not available, the total already exceeds the previous best annual output (that of 1899) by close upon £100,000, and shows an increase over 1900 of £105,322 18s 6d. The complete figures cannot be published until the returns come to hand from certain properties now completing their clean-up for the year. The past three weeks' total is made up as follows : — Ohinemuri, £33,755; Thames, £4,830 63 Id; Coromandel, £5,47 2a 6d ; total, £43,632 83 7o\

The report to be submitted at the annqal meeting of the Enterprise Gold DredgiDg Co. will show that gold returns from the two dredges for tbe year aggregate 1,8220z 7dwt llgr, of the value of £7,069 16s 2d. Unfortunattly, however, the expenditure for repairs and replacements amounted to £2,367 Is 6d, and this large outlay, together with the verdict and coßts in the action of the Chics go Company of £904 19a lOi, prevented the directors being able to pay a larger dividend than 7s 6d per share during the year. In accordance with the resolutions pissed by the shareholders the company has been registered under the Companies Act, and the capital increased to £7,000 by the issue of 3,500 additional shares.

At Waihi the Hon J. McGowan, Minister of Mines, related an incident connected with hie first mining ventare on the Thames. He and another young man started in business in Auckland in the early sixties. During tbig time (bey decided to have ft shot at

mining on the Thames, aud with this object in view 'sent an expert to the* Thames^who after a week oe so returned and* reported the particular property they were after as being a rank duffer. Subsequently it turned out to be one of tha biggest gold producers on the field, and' not attaching, any importance to their expert's report, he was soon actively engaged in mining on the Thames, Where his home has been sinoe 1867.
