THE BOER WAR.
London, January 14.
Lord Kitchener's weekly report states : — Twenty Boers were killed, 9 wounded, 203 taken prisoners, and 93 surrendered. The British Government have purchased 80,000 rnorgen of land near Ficksburg, 45,000 near Thabanchu, and more elsewhere in the Orange River Colony. They are already allotting farms.
At the inaugural meeting of the London Liberal Federation, Sir H. C. Bannerman advocated a Battlement in South Africa by assent, not force, and favoring negotiations, not subjugation. He deslared that Lord Milner and Mr Cham berlain were obstacles in the way of peace. Referring to Lord Rosebery's recent speech, he declared there was no difference between his views and those of Lord Rosebery in regard to the future settlement in South Africa. He rejoiced at the return of Lo/d Rosebery to public life. lord Rosebery's name was frequently hooted, while the names of Mr Lloyd George and Miss Emily Hobhouse received an ovation.
' The Times,' commenting on Sir H. Campbell-Bannerman's speech before the Liberal Federation, says that he has accentuated the paralysis of the Liberals, and considering his own pro-Boer attitude his overtures to Lord Rosebery are insulting. General Bruce Hamilton wires that be was marching when Colonel Wing reported a large concentration of Boeis un the very spot where he encamped the previous uighc. He 'retraced his stepp. The Boers, unfortunately, quitted a roadside farm and gave the alarm. On reaching Knapdaar he Haw the enemy trekking three milea distant, with Botha in a Cape cart a little beyond. They were chased for seven miles, when the British horses were exhausted. He saw 400 Boers. The British casualties were slight.. Thirtythree Boers were captured. Captain Mueller, a German., commands De Wet's guns. De Wet, doubling, eluded the pursuit of hiß drivers at Witkopjes, near. Vrede. Portion of his followers were driven to the hills south of Heilbron.
The prevalence of smallpox at Hounslow will postpone the departure of the sth Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment till the middle of February. ; Hobakt, January 15. The War Office has called for lenders for 100,0001 0 of Tasmanian jam for South Africa.
