Lord Kitchener's despatches are not sensational, but show a great improvement in South Africa, which is instanced by the fact that between June, 1900, aud last June there were 28 interruptions on the railway, while not a single interruption has been reported for the last three months. *
Private W. H. Stock, of the Sixth New Zealand Contingent, died from enteric fever at Charleston, on the 9th inst. He belonged to Kakanui, Otago.
Colonel Sir James Willocks, who commanded the expedition that relieved Kumassie in 1900, has been ordered to South Africa.
A man named Lichenberg has been executed at Aiiwal for murdering Lieutenant Neumeyer, who was captured unarmed and shot by two Boers in November, 1900. The other murderer was previously executed. Colonel Byng captured several Boers and a Krupp gun, minus breach block, near Beitz, The " Standard's " Pretoria correspondent states tbat tbe correct total of Boers in the field is 13,000. This includeß rebels. Armored trains between Kroonstad and Wolveboek prevented De Wet and 1,200 men crossing the railway. De Wet retired eastward, De Lisle pursuing him. Colonel Wing captured 42 Boers north-west of IJrmelo, including Major Wolmarans, Captain Wolmarans, and Lieutenant Molan, of the Staats Artillerie. Reuter's Agency states that the ten rebels under Commandant Gueldenhuis robbed aud shot eight natives at Sutherland, Cape CColou r . According to the •• Daily Express," the Eotterdam newspaper •• Nieuwo Rotterdam Courant " honestly confesses that Dr Leyds paid it to publish the statement that the Boers wounded and taken prisoners ab Elandslaagte were killed by the British. Lieutenant Riddick, New Zealand Mounted Rifles, is convalescent and has resumed duty. Sydney, January 13. Lord Kitchener has asked Colonel Williams, who did such good service as surgeon-general in the Australasian Medical Corps, to return to South Africa. Melbourne, January 13. The Melbourne volunteers are iudisposed to respond to replace those in South Africa at Is a day while the Yeomen receive 53.
