UNEXPLAINED MIRACLES.
This is not an age for taking things upon trust. Tbe modern man displays a Toddy-like desire to ' see wheels go wound ' which science is alway* anxious to 'gratify. But even science is helpless in the face of some of our modem miracles-. The Eontgen rays have been' discovered for six years now, -but their action is etiJl unexplained, Tae T» rays ace an ©Yen greater miracle. By their aid their dUcorerer, Alex. OrlofF, has steered torpedoes at a distance of two and ahalf'miles, and that without wires or any connecting medium save air and water. At two miles distance the T. rays beam is 200 yards across, and the torpedo can be controlled anywhere in this area. Still a greater mystery in the field of- light are the Becquerel rays, emanated by the comparatively newly- discovered substance radium, .which acts as a port of mineral glowworm, it will store up sunlight, and, e^ea if kept in pitch darkness for years, will be found to gleam with tbe Bame soft radiance. Becquerel rays pierce not only flesh bub bone. •Another mystery of light which is Again an effect without a known cause . js obtained by vimply spinning a lump jbf loaf sugar on a lathe and tapping it r&pidiy with a small hammer. A constant play of light is thus produced. ..TeeJit Lorrf fied an assemblage of scientists by transmitting through his hand and body a current of electricity a= . hundred times greater than is used to kill a criminal. He explained thai it ... jwas perfectly safe to handle such a current if it was alternating electricity; but as to why such a distinction should ; "BXisrM "wis "unSbie to state. Ihe ReMAEE-ABL? iCujlBS OF RHEUMATISM JVom the ' "V indicator,' ftuiherfordfcon, ' 18.0. :— The; fcditor.. of the ' Vindicator ' b»s 'had occasion to test the efficacy of Chamberlain's P*in Balm twics with the moit remarkable results in each easel vFirst, with rheumatism in the shoulder from which he suffered excruciating pain t)t ten days, which was relieved with tiro applications of Pain Balm, rubbing tbe 'parts afflicted'^ and realizing instan benefit and -entire relief in a very short time. Second,- in rheumatism in thigh joint, almußt proßtratiog him with seydre '^>am, which w»s relieved by two applications, rabb^^wjtb the liniment on retiring sc night',' 'and getting up free from Fot.talia by B. S. JPolsob, chemist, liftwreoot;, Frioe Is 6d, big bizj da.
spectroscope is another unexplained mystery in its action, as is also the familiar mariner's compass. There are places in the world where the compass will not act at all. At Kotchetowka, in Bussia, Professor Leyst, of Moscow, found that the dipping-needle pointed downwards. Electricity supplies many miracles. Plants can be grown at twice the usual rate by passing a mild current through the soil. Horrible cases ot cancer and lupus are* also cured by its use, but how no doctor can explain, -any more than he can say why it is that keeping a patient suffering from email* pox or measles in a room hung with red will allay the eruption.
