A WINDFALL.

A good lady in Newport, who is so* afraid of becoming notorious and of having all sorts of begging applications made to her oh the strength of her good luck that she keeps her name secret, is said to have come into a fortune through the death of a long-lost uncle in New Zealand. The story (writes the London correspondent of the ' Lyttelton Times ') is that the uncle emigrated in 1858 before the lady (a policeman's wife) was born. It was known that he had gone to seek fortune at the Australian gold diggings. But it was not known that he had drifted on to New Zealand, and found more solid and less elusive returns in farming. No tidings of him came to his relatives in the old country for years. A few months ago, amongst the missing claimants for. dead men's fortunes the name of the Newport policeman's wife cropped up. Following this up evidence was submitted in the proper quarter, and it was found that the wife and her brother, being the niece and nephew respectively to the longlost New Zealand farmer, were tbe beneficiaries named in bis will. The f 6rtnne' is > understood to ran to £50,000. Moreover, when the ftoal settlement is made at the end of next month, it is probable that the big farm upon which the uncle lived and died will also pass to the lucky recipients of his wealth. There cannot have been a greafc many uncles with £50,000 and a big farm in the colony who have been altogether lost sight of. by their relatives. . t
