LAWRENCE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the above body was held in the Council Chambers on Monday night. Present — His Worship the Mayor (Mr B. Winn), and Crs Jeffery, Johnson, Thompson, Chalmers, Walker, and Skinner. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read acd confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. M'latDsh, asking for some improvements to Hill-sbreet. — Referred to the Public Works Committee with power to act. From D. Johnston, asking that a : channel be formed on the north side of Colonsay-street to take away the drainage from his house.— Referred to the Public Workß Committee with power to act. Several residents in Colonsay-street complained of the nuisance caused by the drainage from the street flowing into their properties. — The complaint was referred to the Public Works Committee. From Messrs Turnbull, Jones, and Co., electricians, in reference to an electric light installation, • intimating should the Council decide to go in for 1 ihat form of lighting that they would be

pleased to tender for the work. — Keceived.

The manager, Bank of New Zealand, wrote requesting the Council to pass the formal resolution authorising the Council to borrow from the bank during the current year by way of overdraft. — The necessary resolution was accordingly passed. From Mr Barlow, Hawea, on behalf of a Chinese resident of that town in reference to the disinterring of the remains of a Chinaman named Ghing "King Sang, who was buried in the Tuapeka Cemetery. He asked for particulars as to the interment and the number of allotment in order to comply with the necessary preliminaries. — The matter was referred t© the clerk to attend to. LIGHTING COMMITTEE'S REPOKT. The following report from the Lighting Committee, to which the two proposals for lighting the town by electricity and water gas had been referred : — " That this committee report to the Council that they think it advisable to to submit the whole question to the j ratepayers, and that a vote be taken upon the following questions: — (1) The -raising of a loan. (2) The question as to whether the system to be adopted be electricity or water gas. The report was received, and after a number of questions had been asked as to whether both proposals had received equal consideration, and replied to in the affirmative, Cr Skinner moved the adoption of the report. He said the result of the Committee's report left it, and he thought wisely, with the ratepayers to decide whether anything further be done,in the matter. In the first place the ratepayers would have to decide at the ballot box whether they would sanction the raising of the loan proposed, and at the same time what form of lighting should be adopted. In that way both systems would have fair play. Cr Chalmers seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were, on the recommendation of the Finance Committee, passed for payment: — L'harles Smith, £3 19s fM. O'Gorman, £1 Bs. BALANCES.
