MINING NOTES.
The Ettrick dredge has been idle for a few days to allow of some repairs being effected. It is expected that she will be again in full swing towards the end of the present week. The gold returns of the following companies are to hand : — Dunedin Dredging Co., 950z ; Golden Run Dredging Co., 370z 12dwt ; Upper Waipori Dredging Co., 230z for 137 hours' dredging; Jutland Flat Dredging Co., 19oz 17dwt for 132 hours' actual dredging ; Golden Treasure Dredging Co., lOoz 13dwt for 60 hours' dredging. Messrs Cossens and Black, who have the contract for alterations to the Otago Co.'s dredge, Ettrick, started work on board on Friday last. The elevator and other portions of the machinery have been manufactured at the contractors' works in Dunedin, and the entire outfit is now on the ground. No time will be lost in getting it on board.
The Golden Gate Co.'s pontoons are well advanced. The contractors, Messrs Eitchie and Co., expect to be finished in three weeks at the latest. The work has been kept back through want of some long lengths of timber and the bad state of the roads and broken weather. Messrs Morgan, tiable and Co., the contractors for the machinery, are making i rapid progress, some of the machinery having ' already been sent on. This contract, as well as the Otago Dredgirjg Co.'s, is under the supervision of Mr E. Roberts, consulting engineer, "who has just returned from a visit of inspection. Our Millers Flat correspondent informs us that Macdonnell and party, known locally as the Surprise party, are giving their dredge, which formerly belonged to Dewar and party, of Dumbarton Bock, a thorough overhaul, preparatory to making a start in the course of a week or two on their claim above the pant. It is reported that this party are endeavoring to get Mr John Werner, secretary of the Confederated Miners' Association, to use his influence to have the proposed Millers Flat bridge erected some considerable distance above the punt site in order to allow the party to work that stretch of the river. If Mr Werner is a wise man, I would strongly advise him not to interfere in this matter ; for I question if he'll be thanked for his pains.
/ Mx Miiachlan says that under the Advances to Settlers Act, men have been employed as valuers who know nothing of farming, and have only " blacked boots and served jn an ojice."
