THE WAIPORI RIVER QUESTION.

Our Wellington correspondent writes: — I have more than once during the past few days endeavored to elicit something ■pacific and> circumstantial as to the intentions of the Government on the Waipori question. I have certainly been told that arrangements are being made which, when completed, will finally and effectually set the vexed question at rest. What the nature of the arrangements may be I cannot say. I tried but in- , effectually to discover, so that I might be the means of conveying pleasant information to those miners in your district whom this trouble has deprived of their means of livelihood. Both the Minister of Mines and the Premier refape to hold converse on the subject, and resent any attempt to press for information. To speak, the truth, they impress me as if they wished to bo let alone, so that they might forget the business and allow it to drift iuto some kind of settlement or compromise e'eur ot their interference. By those interested in the question here, it was thought the " Gazette" proclamation would be sufficient for all the purposes of settlement. But it seems now the Government themselves have ceased to have any confidence in it, if they evfu* had any, winch, to me, seems doubtful. Everything that can well he done tovrards induciug the (xowrnment to act iv the matter has been done, and withont the slightest effect. Information of an important kind is said to be available next week as to the intentions of the Government. Of that I have my doubts. It is, at all event?, certain that if the Government mean to uci the time i.-* near at hand when they will bo forced to do so or to declare themselves in s^ine way.
