THE REVOLT IN PERU.
The Lima correspondent of ' The Times ' writes under the date March 25:— "It appears by telegrams from the north and the south that peace is restored and all is quiet. All political prisoners have been set at liberty, and measures are being taken to disband the forces of General Caceres's Government. Lima, meanwhile, is taken care of by the Urban Guard, composed of about 2,000 volunteers, many of them foreigners. The number of killed and wounded during the two day's fighting between General Pierola's men and the Government's forces is appalling. To-day's return gives the number of bodies buried at 1,651 and the number of wounded at about 2,000. This is tremendous, considering that the opposing armies numbered together from 7,000 to 8,000 men. The Government troops lost more than double the number of the revolutionary forces, owing to the hostility of the people, who fired on them from the roofs of the houses. General Caceres's forces were in the Plaza, the palace, and the Fort of Santa Catalina. These troops sacked many shops and stores, and also destroyed the contents of the Union Club in the presence of their officers. General Pierola has resigned the command of his. army, and has placed his troops at the disposal of the Provisional Government. General Caceres has taken refuge on board a French man-of-war ! in Callao, and awaits the arrival of one of H.B.M.'s ships to take him out of the country. His family are in the British Legation. A Presidential election will shortly be held. The forces of the late Government have been disbanded and sent to their homes by steamers from Callao. Each man received a. small sum of money." A breach of promise action legally must be brought within six years from the time of the breach ; but, practically, if it is not brought much sooner than that the lady of blighted affections has buL a poor chance of compensation.
