A SCOTCH SERMON.
" Ah, my friends what causeß have we for gratitude — oh, yes, for the deepest gratitude ! Look at the place of our habitation! How grateful eeould we be that we do not leeve in the far north ; eh, no, amid the frost and the snow, and the cauld and weet, ob, no ! where there's a lang day tae half o' the year, oh, yes, and a lang lang nicht the tither, oh, yes, that we do not. depend upon Ihe Aurawaray Boreawlis, oh, no, that we do not gang shivering aboot in skine, oh, no, smoking amang the snaw like mowdiwarls, ob, no, and how grateful should we be that we do not leeve in the far south beneath the equatwor, and a sun aye burnin', where the sky's hot, and ye're burnt black as a smiddy, ob, yes, and crocodiles, oh, yes, and fearsome beasts growlin' an' grinnin' at ye amang the woods, where the very air is a fever, like the burnin' breath o' a fiery drawgon, that we do not leeve in nich places, oh, no ! But that we leeve in this blessit island of oors, callit Great Britain, oh, yes, and in that pairt of it named Scotland, and in that bit o' auld Scotland that looks up at Ben Nevis, oh, yes, where there's neither frost or cauld wind cor weet nor hail nor toegers nor lions buruin' suns nor hurricaneßnor — ." Here a tremendous blast of wind and rain from Ben Nevis blew in the windows of the kirk and brought the preacher's eloquence to an abrupt conclusion.
