AN APPEAL.

In his April issue of " Night and Day," just to hand, Dr. Barnardo supplies abundant material for reflection. Although he had nearly five thousand boys and girls under his charge, it seems that a constant stream of new candidates is flowing into the homes through the numerous ever-open doors, which welcome the destitute in London and the provinces alike; and, judging by the instances of waif rescue set forth in " Personal Notes," the pitiable conditions from which Dr. Barnardo saves so many young people appear nearly as bad as they were 30 or 40 years ago. Dr. Barnardo believes more firmly than ever in the efficacy of wisely-managed emigration. Already this yea*, 167.. selected boys and youths have gone out from the Homes to Canada, making a grand total of 7462. It is claimed that actually over 99 per cent of the boys thus placed outbeyond the four seas have acquitted themselves satisfactorily! We commend the magazine to the perusal of our readers as a deeply interesting record of what is being done to cure, and better still to prevent, many of the social ills from which the body politic now suffers. The needs of the work are urgent. One item alone is £140 every day for food. Clearly the work that is being done in Dr Barnardo's Homes deserves the support of all humane and Christian people. Dr Barnardo's address is 18 to 26, Stepney Causeway, London.
