THE DEAN CASE.
In common with a large number of newspapers in various parts of the colony, our columns have been honored by the woman Dean in the pursuit of her baby-farming industry. As far back as 1890 we received the following, which appeared in our columns as an advertisement : — " Wanted. — Alady, country resident, is desirous of adopting a young child ; comfortable home and the affection of a mother." The address furnished by the advertiser was as follows : — " Miss Cameron, The Larches, Southland." There were two or three inquiries at our office in answer to that advertisement, but we have no reason to think that any children were sent from this district to " The Larches." The last advertisement from the same quarter was on the Bth instant, and in the interval between the date of its receipt by us and its appearance in our columns, three days later, the nature of Mrs Dean's traffic had been made public and the woman herself arrested. The advertisement just referred to ran thus: — "Lady in the country wants to adopt an infant (male preferred.)— Address, ' A.V.E.' Times Office." A few days after this appeared the horrid discovery of buried infants had been made around " The Larches " and a nest of illegitimate children had been found in the hovel which served as an emporium for Mrs Dean's extensive business. Under such circumstances, unlike previous advertisements from the same quarter, there were no inquiries about this last announcement, and the trade, as far at least, as " Miss Cameron, from the . Larches," is concerned, is hopelessly extinguished. On Wednesday morning Minnie Dean, of Winton, was charged at Milton with the murder of Eva Hornsby, an infant. The Court was crowded, principally by women, and the prisoner was remanded tolnvercargill.
