THE SON OF HIS FATHER.
Surmise is still rife as to bow George Gould is to turn out as the successor to his father, the {I Little Wizwd" of evil repute. Some people regard as ominous the frank tribute to the young man given in Jay Gould's will:— "My beloved son George (l)uld, having developed a remarkable busi* naas ability, and haviDg for twelve years devoted himself entirely to my business, and during tbe past five years taken entire charge of all my difficult interests, I hereby fix the value of his services at 5,000,000dol." When a sinister operator like Jay Gould, they argue, forms such a high opinion of a young man's business ability that he values the use of it at the rate of a million dollars per annum that young man must be watched and distrusted night and day. One farseeing arbitrage dealer, whose name is too well known to be mentioned, compressed into one sentence the view that is taken by the inside riog in tbe Stock Exchange, " George Gould," he said to me, " will be a Sunday school young man at first, and everything will go smoothly, and a new era will open on Wall street, until we are all yearning to embrace him and to trust him to any extent, just to show our confidence in him ; then we shall suddenly discover that he is the son of his father— and we won' Jor gel it."
