PERSECUTION OF THE JEWS IN RUSSIA.
To give our readers some idea of the attitude of tho Kussian authorities towards the unfortunate Jews, we take some particulars from a London paper supplied by its St. Petersburg cortespwndent. From these it would appear that whether the unfortunate liobrcw " endeavors to preserve his individuality intact or atiives to -submerge it in the coean of llussian nationality he is always found to be in conflict with the law." The most vexatious ukases are levelled against the oppressed raco which deny them the right of dressing according to their lo;>g established customs or even of pi eserving tbe Christian names. lustance the following clipping from the official "Warsaw Diary" :— "The laws forbidding the drebs, the cut of the hair, aud other characteristic peculiarities of the toilet of the Jews have been continually violated pf late with impuuity. From this d^y forward it has been resolved $o ntuiiqli" e\«jry such infringement b/'a'tfuc of live roubles — 10s — aud'snbuld the offender be unuble to pay the fine, by arrest," But on equally tyrannical edict compels the poor Jf \v to print his Hctirew name and the name of his father in large letters ou the outside of his place of business, so that all purchasers may know with w hat nationality they are dealing. On the other hand, as we said above, the alien is not allowed to make known his Christian nan;p. The Minister of Posts aud Telegraphs . has just published a notice for the benefit of any Jews who n»ay possess such a thing. It runs: "Notice is hereby given, that in future no letters, registered or unregistered, will be delivered at the Post o|sce or at. ijieir" private dwellings to tjews wfyo Baye Qh,r'}stian ; names."
