A MODERN ENOCH ARDEN.

At the Wandsworth (England) Police Court a man applied to Mr Denman for advice in the following matter : — His daughter married a man named W. Wheeler. He deserted her ; enlisted and went to India, where he remained eleven years. Meanwhile the wife marries again and has three children. Wheeler returns and wishes to marry tbe widow of the applicant's brother. Could he do so ? Mr Denman : Wait a minute. It lockj as though your daughter has commi 4 "' ■] bigamy already, Applicant: Yes, sir, ilufc ia so. Mr Denman : And now her husband wishes to commit bigamy too ? Applicant : Well, sir, I thought, perhaps he might marry again considering he has been away such a long time. Mr Denman : But his wife is still living ? Applicant : Yes, sir, and has three children. You see, I am naturally anxious, being the father of hia wife. Mr Denman : Well, I should certainly advise you not to allow Wheeler to marry your brother's widow. Applicant: Thank you, sir.
