THE ANARCHIST OUTBREAK IN SPAIN.
9 An Anarchist attempt to sack the town of Xeres occurred on January 9. According to the Madrid correspondent of the 'Standard,' the authorities at Seville, Cadiz, and Xeres hadrecently observed an increase of agitation among the Anarchists in the towns of Xeres, Arcos, and Lebrija, and information sent by the local authorities led them to beHeve that some disturbance would take place, and on Friday night the authorities arrested sixtyfive Anarchists, who were lodged in gaol at Xeres. This no doubt irritated the Anarchists, who sent emissaries through the country around Xeres, invitrcg the rural Anarchists to strike, and on many estates the men acted upon these instructions. At half-past eleven o'clock on Friday night (the Sfch) some bands of Anarchists, armed with sticks, scythes, knives, and firearms, appeared in the streets shouting " Long live Anarchy ! " and "Death to the burgesses." They barbarously murdered a wine merchant and two other persons in the streets, and, divided into three groups each 150 strong, they made a futile attack upon the prison, to liberate their companions, who were shouting inside. Other Anarchists attacked the barracks, but were easily repelled, dispersed, and pursued by cavalry and infantry, who captured seventy of them. Meanwhile another band had attacked the Town Hall, where the principal authorities were assembled : but the Civil Guard, night watchmen, and police kept; them at bay until, being joined by the military returning from the pursuit of the aecond band, the assailants were utterly routed. The whole affair passed off so rapidly that in two hours the town was cleared of the asaailants, whom the cavalry pursued into the country, and captured many, including some wounded men and the supposed authors of the murders. The Anarchists cut the telegraph lines and plundered several farms, from which they took the horses and mules, before entering Xeres, where they expected to be joined by their fellow- Anarchists and the prisoners in the gaol, with a view to attack the rich people who were attending at the theatre. The prisoners boldly confessed that they intended to sack the town and kill the leading burgesses. One Anarchist was killed and several wounded in the streets. The town w;; la a state of panic. Later cablegrams repoited that five of the leaders of the Anarchists were executed.
There was onpe a kirk session which dej cided to give its meenister a lengthened holiday.
