THE SHEEP-DOG TRIAL.
As usual the sheep dog competition was held in one of Mr Peter Eobertson's paddocks, a good many persons being present from all parts of the Tuapeka district to witness this interesting feature of the show. The workperformed by some of the dogs was highly praised, and fcHowed the pitch of perfection a well bred collie may be brought to by intelligent training. The promptness with which the dogs responded to the least gesture or word of their owner was simply marvellous. The judges were MeSsrs J. Sutherland (Waitahuna), W. Smith jpreenfield) and A. Moflatt (Beau-
mont); and in awarding the prize to the winning dog, they spoke in complimentary terms of the kindly manner in which tlie owner (Mr "W. Leslie) had "worked tbe animal. Mr Leslie's dog, " Black " by name, gained the full number of points for heading, bringing, being under command, and yarding, the last operation having being performed in twelve minutes. The second prize was won by a very smart collie, " Jack," owned by Mr D. Munro. This dog worked remarkably well, but he lacked the finished training, as well, perhaps, as the finer instinct, of his more successful rival. " Jack " managed to run his trio of sheep into the yard in nine minutes. Mr Leslie's dog "Sweep" came in for third prize, although unable after repeated trials, to accomplish the yai-ding-up successfully. Mr G. Eenry's " Darkie" got his sheep into the yard in thirteen minutes and was awarded fourth prize. Mr J. Evans' " Cheviot," Mr G. Henry's " Jack," and Mr 0. M'Cann's " Black " also competed. The sheep for the trial were provided by Mr S. Henry. Messrs Nichols and Lawrence, members of the committee, deserve a word of praise for the excellent manner in which they carried out the competition.
