TUAPEKA POULTRY SOCIETY.

The fifth annual show of the above society was held in the Volunteer Hall, Lawrence, on Thursday afternoon. The weather strongly favoured the success of the show, the day being ju3t of the kind that might be selected by the committee had they been commissioned with the ordering of it. The night, too, was bright, crisp, and bracing, and the attendance consequently both during the day and in the evening was probably the largest that has yet rewarded the efforts of the Society. Of the exhibition itself, it is impossible to speak too highly ; every class of birds worthy of note, in a prize-taking sense, was to be found at the show, and among them were some capable of holding their own in the very j best of our metropolitan shows. Of course, the Society has now been inexis* tence some years, and as it includes some very keen judges and enthusiasts among its patrons it is reasonable to look for something above the average. In this respect nothing could excel the quality of the blaok-red game birds shown by the Messrs Hart. Their coes easily carried off first prize ; the same bird both here and at Dunedin last year, as a cockerel , performing a similar feat. The same bird, it may be remembered, also swept the board at the recent show held at Dunedin. Before coming into the possession of its present owners, this bird was the property of Mr E. S. Leversedge, of Christchurch, from whom it was purchased. The imported Englishbred bird was awarded second place, while his colonial brother maintained the national reputation by beating the imported specimen by many points. In hens, Messrs Hart, with an imported bird, carried off first prize; Mr Potts taking second honours, and also a first place for a cockerel, which was also one of theLeversedge's strain. The pile games could hardly be called a first-rate lot, though there were a few pretty birds among them, Mr D. L. Christie being the principal exhibitor. The sanw remark applies to the duckwings, the best birds in this class being shown by Mr Potts. Among the Plymouth Rocks, there were some handsome birds, Mr' Christie showing the best of the lot. The principal prize-taker in the black Spanish, a most attractive lot of birds, was Mr John Rose, of Dunedin. Magnificent also were the white Leghorns in their snowy plumage, the bulk of the prizes in this class falling to Messrs Egglestone and Simpson. The first -named gentleman was fortunate enough to carry off the highest honours in this class,' and was, therefore, declared to be the winner of the challenge cup, valued at £3 3s. The brown Leghorns were a decided improvement on last year's birds, Mr Potts being the chief exhibitor. There was a very fine display of black Langshans, Mr J. T. Nichols figuring as the principal prize-taker, the judges speaking in high terms of a very nicelooking cockerel exhibited by that gentleman. The Houdans were rather an indifferent lot ; but the white-crested Polish, owned by Messrs Hart, were as usual a superior quality of exhibits. The dark Dorkings were well up to the standard of the same class exhibited on previous occasions, Mr Carlton, of Roslyn, who was the chief prize-taker in this class last year, once more distinguishing himself. The Wyandottes showed up well, and the buff Cochins, while not so numerous as last year, were well represented in point of excellence. The same may also be said of the white Cochins. There was a good show of bantams, both in black-reds, Seabright, and brown-reds, a neat pile pullet taking first prize. The special prize for the best bantam in the show was awarded to a beautifully-marked pile bred by Mr Potts. The display of Hamburgs was remarkably good, some very fine specimens of the golden-pencilled, of which there were fully fifty entries, being exhibited. Messrs Potts, Crooke, Morris and Coxon were the principal prizetakers. The silver-pencilled Hamburgs were not so well represented, and, with one exception, were a rather inferior collection. Messrs Pilling, Morris, Webster, and Jeffery were the exhibitors. The silver-spangled Hamburgs shown by Messrs Lillico and Gare were much admired. In dark Rouen dncks Mr Carlton had every thinghis own way. The champion prize for the best bird in the show was again awarded to Mr Aitken's silver-crested Polish cock, beating six competitors. The silver cup presented by Mrß. Hart now becomes Mr Aitken's property, having been won twice. The dogs were a weak feature of the show. Among the canary exhibits were some capital cage-birds. Mr Joseph Bates, of Caversham, exhibited some very pretty birds, as also did Mr Skinner and Mr W. O. Brown. A revolving cage, ingeniously made by Mr Skinner, excited a great deal of attention, as did also a pair of white mice and some guinea pigs by the same exhibiter. The gentlemen appointed to act as judges were Messrs C. Wedge and C. R. Eason (both of Roslyn), who discharged their somewhat delicate duties in the most satisfactory manner. The committee, as usual, wera indefatigable in their exertions, and richly deserve the sucoess that attended their labours. The arrangements were also in every respecfc perfect, a very large share of the work "falling to the lot of tho Secretary (Mr H. J. Ponsonby), whb deserves to be complimented on the 'successful manner in which he discharged his dutips. The following is the PRIZE LIST :— GAMS. Black Red— Cock: B. andH. Hart, land 2 ; N O. Potts 3.
