RAES JUNCTION.

(From,our;own Correspondent.)

A strolling gentleman rejoicing in the name of Purves billed himself to appear at the local schoolhouse and entertain the settlers on Monday night, but he appears to have forgotten his ap-

pointment and never turned up. The disappointment was considerable to those who attended; but, perhaps, it might have been still greater had the gentleman put ni an appearance. ' • All's ■well that ends well."

Mr Valentine, M.H.R., has been exerting himself to get us a telephone, but I am sorry to say he has not as yet been successful. Perhaps he may prevail on the powers that be to erect it as soon as the one to the Beaumont is completed. He has done a good service in getting it to Tuapeka. Mouth, and I hope he will succeed in doing the same for this part of his district.

I see the labour ]^[.H»E.'s have gone against the farmers in the matter of supplying the latter with agricultural papers, etc. I suppose our member will keep hammering away at them until he does get whatever he wants ; and that is but right on his part, as what he is asking is very reasonable. The rabbits are not taking the poison this year in our district as readily as they have been accustomed to do in other years. I understand trapping is to commence very soon ; and, of course, that will mean sending them to some factory. It's a pity the Moa Flat factory did not go ahead at once, as we all expected. Postponing it until March simply means sending away labour and profit out of the district. I trust a fresh start may be made with it. With such men as Messrs Gr. A. Smith, Elliott, Manuel, Waugh, Kerr, Tamblyn, Westcott, Burton, Andrew, Elder, and a host of others, there should be no difficulty in getting a good factory under way. The only thing necessary is that they should put their heads together and make up their minds to be unanimous ; and with a long pull, a strong* pull, and a pull together, the work is done and the industry is afloat.
