LAWRENCE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the above- . named body was held on Monday evening and was attended by the Mayor and Crs Walker, Chalmers (Jas.), Chalmers (Wm.), M'lntosh, Arbuckle, Johnston, and Hetherington. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr John Tuckey, having heard that the Council required some land for the purpose of storing water, wrote offering section 2, block liv., town of Lawrence, at the rate of £20 per acre, or sections 2 and 3, same block, about five acres in extent, at £15 per acre. — Receiyed. The Clerk of the Ashburton County Council forwarded the following resolution passed by that body, which had been transmitted to the Government, with a request that it be inserted in l.he amended Counties Act : — " That' section 211 of the Counties Act, 1886, bo amended so as to give councils power to take moneys on deposit up to the limit provided by said section, so as to givo councils the option of either incurring an overdraft or taking moneys on deposit or partly one or part by the other, the total amount so raised not to exceed the limit provided by the said section." If the Borough Council approved of the suggested amendment, a request was made that the Government be urged to give effect to same. — Received. The Controller and Auditor-General wrote stating that as an auditor had no means of discovering whether rates, rents, or other moneys, retm-ned as scill outstanding, had actually been received or not, and as blame had been attached to the Audit Office when such defalcations had been undetected, he desired to point out that the only means by which such deficiencies can be prevented is by constant v'gilance on the part of members of the council, who, being personally acquainted with the district, can readily ascertain — and whose duty it is to ascertain — whether such moneys have been paid or nob, and who can always ensure detection by making inquiry otherwise than through the treasurer or collector as to unpaid rates or rents or by suing for the same. — Received. Mr H. J. Ponsonby wrote tendering his resignation as keeper of the Borough pound. — Accepted. ACCOUNTS. The following accounts wore passed for payment : — Dunedin City Council, £4 14s 6d; Jas White, £1 9s 7d ; J. Duthie and Co., 6s; Browne Bros., 12s 2d; New Zealand Railways, ss; Jas. Wilson, £8 8s ; Geo. Walker, £3 ; P. Uren, £13 9s 3d. RESERVES COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The Reserves Committee's report was received, and it was agreed that the transfer .of the Borough lease be approved, conditionally on terms of the lease being strictly carried out. This was all the business.
