CORRESPONDENCE.

THE TE AROHA ELECTION. (To the Editor.) SIR, — A local appeared in a recent is3ae o t the Tuapeka Times to the effect that Mr Win. Archd. Murray intended to contest the seat for Te Aroha.'^l send you a quotation from a letter I received about three weeks ago, which please publish, or as much of it :*s will correct the error you have been led into. — I am, &c, Thos. Murray. [Quotation.] " The Financial Statement is,l consider, one of the ablest ever presented to a New Zoalaad Parliament, but contains proposals about taxation that are inequitable and injudicious, as they will be injurious. The phrase about. • equality of sacrifice ' is meaningless and mischievous. The exemptions place the power in the hands of a large class to impose taxation, penal and ruinous, on another and small class, from which they themselves will be exempt It is a bribe to the voting power of the many and an appeal to the worst form of human selfishness, greed, and immorality to aid in plundering their richer neighbours. We have heard it repeated till I am sick of it that 30,000 people more have left New Zealand during the past six years than entered it, and papers, men, and politicians prate about liberal land laws to stop the exodus and provide employment for the idle and the iutligent, while our Premier makes it penal for people now to spend over t'3ooo on their land to provide employment aud increase tho wealth-producing powers of the Colony. Why has any class to be 'sacrificed,' bub for a corrupt, costly, and unsuitable government? Everybody ssoms disappointed at my nob standing for Te Aroha. Had my health and business permitted, I would certainly havo J contested the seat successfully, but I need all i my time and strength to bring my operations into profitable results, and then, if spared and well, I may devote some time to politics." (Signed) Wai. Archibald Murray.
