(From our own Correspondent. ) Dunedin, August 25th. The certificate of the mate of the Ino (Mr James Anderson) has been suspended for two months by the Court of Inquiry, who held him responsible ior the recent accident. The exportation of draught horses to Sydney still goes on. The Wakatipu will take some of Messrs Mollison's best horses this trip. The "Star" claims to have received early intimation of the Public Works proposals. The total vote asked for will be £2,598,000, a less sum than last year. The Otago Central and East and West Coast railways are set down for £150,000 each. Sums are also placed on the Estimates for the Waimea-Switzers, Catlins River, and Palmerston-Waiherao lines. Mr Ormond's reasons for not moving a vote of want of confidence are thus given in a letter to a friend in Napier : — "The difficulty is how to arrange the formation of any stable Government to succeed them. I have looked at it from all points of view, and can see nothing definite or satisfactory ; and the circumstances of the Colony are so desperately bad that nothing bufc a really strong Government can hope to do any good." , (Per Press Association. ) r ■ Timabu, August 23rd. A. man named Edwin Best, a tailor, died early this morning from an overdose of chlorodyne. He had been drinking heavily of late, and last night purchased, or had purchased for him, three bottles of chlorodyne, which he swallowed. He was conveyed to the hospital, where everything possible was done, but without avail. Best had been several times before the Court lately for failing to maintain his wife and family. He stated that through his wife going to the Salvation Army his home had become a little " hell on earth." Invercargili., August 24th. An inquest was held at Menzies' Ferry to-day on the body of Henry Cunningham, a lad of 16 years, found drowned in the Mataura on Saturday. From the evidence it appeared that the youth had been in a desponding state of mind, and a letter to his family being found in which he intimated his intention of destroying himself through being tired of his life. Search was made in the river on Saturday, where the body was found in 2ft of water, with the hands tied down to the feet. The jury returned a verdict of suicide during temporary insanity.
